Other tutorials will demonstrate how to find other information in Business Insights: Essentials.
Most databases which provide numerical data also provide a short sketch of the company's history. For more in-depth and reliable coverage, however, we use this database.
We will look at company histories for two companies in this tutorial. One is a company that started in 2004 and went public in 2012. The other is a very old company that has gone through various mergers, acquisitions, etc.
1. Enter "Facebook"
in the search box and click
or hit "enter" on
Beneath the company name and description there is a link for "Company History"
1. Click on "Company History"
You should now see a screen that includes the following -
Note that under "Facebook, Inc." it says "International Directory of Company Histories 2008".
This directory does not update every company every year. In this case, you will only see the Facebook history up until 2008, which won't include the fact that it went public in 2012.
2. Click the "Facebook, Inc."
You are now in the company history for Facebook.
Note that at the bottom of the page the source citation is provided. All of the information you need for an APA citation is here, but it is NOT in APA format.
You need to check the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), which is available at the Axinn Library Reference Desk or some other APA citation tool for correct citation format for a book chapter accessed via a website.
Now let's access a company history for another company with a very long history.
1. Enter "AT&T" in the
search box at the top right
of the screen.
Your immediate reaction to the resulting screen might be confusion.
Scroll down, and you will see
Most Americans are familiar with the brand "AT&T" and know that it is also a company, so they search for the company as "AT&T".
As you can see, however, the company name is sometimes written "AT and T Inc."
1. Click on the company name
"AT and T"
You are now in the main page for "AT and T".
To get into the company history, scroll down until you see the box below on the right side of the screen
1. Click "Company History"
on the right of the screen.
You now see two listings, one for "AT&T, Inc." and one for "AT&T Wireless Services, Inc."
Before clicking on the "AT&T link, notice that this is from the International Directory of Company Histories 2012". This history was updated much more recently than the Facebook history.
1. Click the "AT&T" link
You are now in the company history for the "AT&T" company. Notice that it is quite lengthy and covers the various mergers and acquisitions that were considered or done as well as other valuable information.
