in Mergent Online tutorial.

Mergent Online has many different types of business information. In this tutorial, we will focus on identifying companies that form a particular industry.

Other tutorials demonstrate how to find other information in Mergent Online.

For the purpose

1. The Mergent Online homepage
     appears to the right of these
     instructions.  Please look at it.


Note that there are two boxes.

  • The left box is used for company research

  • The right box is used for classification research (by industry code, index, exchange, or country)

As we are looking for companies that form an industry, we will use the right-hand box for this tutorial.

Let's find companies that build new residential housing developments - these builders are known as "operative builders".

If we already knew the NAICS code, we would click the button for NAICS and enter the code in the search box.

For the purpose of this tutorial, however, let's search like we don't know the NAICS code.

In this case, we would still click the "Primary NAICS button, and would then use the "code lookup" link

1.  Click "Primary NAICS" button

2.  Click "Use code lookup" link

Clicking the "Use code lookup" link has now opened a separate window showing the twenty NAICS sector headings.

We are interested in a a type of builder, so this would be in the "Construction" sector (23).

1.  Click the Mergent plus sign to the left of
     "Construction"

Look at the three choices that are presented.  We are interested in housing construction, so the only sub-sector that makes sense is the "Construction of buildings" sub-sector

2.  Click the Mergent plus sign to the left of
     "Construction of buildings"

We are interested in residential housing, so

3.  Click the Mergent plus sign to the left of
     "Residential Building
     Construction"

"Residential Building Construction" will appear again as an industry group -

4.  Click the Mergent plus sign to the left of
     "Residential Building
     Construction"

You now see "New Housing Operative Builders".  Notice that there is no Mergent plus sign to the left of it.  You have finally gotten to the industry level.

Notice also how the numerical NAICS code has expanded to the full six digits as you selected the more specific industry level.  The six-digit NAICS code for our industry "New Housing Operative Builders" is 236117.

Clicking "New Housing Operative Builders" flips you back to the Mergent search screen;  the NAICS code 236117 will automatically appear in the search box.

  • the list is of  NAICS 236117 companies

  • the number of private and public companies

  • [You can restrict the list to public or private companies by clicking on the links on the blue bar]

  • the SIC Code for each company

  • the exchange on which the the stock is traded  (for public companies only) and the ticker symbol if applicable to the exchange

  • the active/inactive status of the company

  • the company's country

You can rearrange the order of the list by clicking on the arrows next to each heading.
